There have been many opinions of what the first recording is. Some claim it was Thomas Edison's "Mary Had a Little Lamb was the first recording ever (which is the most famous rumor). It was the first recording that could be played back after recorded, but it wasn't the FIRST RECORDING EVER. The fi…rst ever EVER produced was actually made on a device called a phonautograph. No, NOT phonograph, the PHONAUTOgraph. It was a device that could transcribe sound to a visible medium, but had no means to play the sound back after it was recorded. Thankfully, last year, people were able to scan the papers into a computer, and the first ever recording was found to be a 10 second excerpt of the french folk song, Au Clair de la lune. Most people will say he was singing "Au Clair de la lune, Pierrot repondit`." This, however, is not the case. Despite sounding like "Au Clair de la lune, Pierrot repondit`", it is not. It is the first line of the song, "Au Clair de la lune, mon ami Pierrot." I found this out by listening closely to a slowed down version, and found after "lune" that it sounded like "mon ami-" not "Pierrot." Also the very last seconds of the recording had two syllables, like in "Pierrot." NOT three syllables as in "repondit`." (MORE)

Answer . The first step is to try to locate their discharge documents. (Modern days that would be a DD-214). If the individual is deceased and you know the burial site contact them for any records they may be holding and the name of the Mortician in case they may have any documents in thei…r possesion. He may have been a member of his local VFW or other patriotic fraternal unit. When you have done your homework, contact the DoD (Department of Vetrans Affairs} with all the information you have compiled and ask for their help. Be prepared to wait even for a nominal response. I believe the first music recordings were tests, done in the 1890s. But the first "real" music recordings began right after the turn of the century with Blues & Jazz. There are many different ways that artists and musicians can record their music. Most signed or popular artists prefer to use a professional recording studio. Professional studios, in comparison to home studios, give the artist a variety of ways to create and record music. Typically pro studios have… a variety of microphones and effects units that effect the way the sound of the instruments or the voice are recorded. Most importantly, professional studios have acoustically designed rooms and large mixing boards. This allows multiple instruments to be recorded simultaneously while the musicians (or band) are playing a song. However, musicians can also record at home. All that is required is a microphone and a means of recording. Typically in the modern world this means a computer and some digital recording software. They are many DIY techniques that people can employ at home to mimic a professional studio - all it requires is knowledge of recording techniques, some creativity, and a little cash. (MORE)

That would get into some hair splitting. The earliest recordings of music tended to be famous classical pieces, but those obviously aren't "pop" music of that era. However, classic American songs (folk-type) were very popular, and many early recordings were of those ("Swanee River", "No Place Like H…ome", etc.) Other than that possibility, yes - jazz probably was the first "popular" music to be recorded. The only equal contender would be marches and patriotic pieces, which were wildly "popular" music at the same time. (MORE)
