In short, you can create a sim (a person) that looks very real and then give it a personality (on the Sims 3, there are over 60 personality traits that you can mix and match) and control it's life from everything to eating a piece of toast to having a baby to mourning the dead to fishing for salmon …to walking up the stairs.
