It really depends on the age group. Mainstream pop music is probably the thing people listen to the most, (sadly) with artists like One Direction and Selena Gomez. \n. \n. Jazz and rock music aren't all that popular anymore, but new sub-categories like rock-punk and punk-rock-pop are a little more… popular. Country music is increasing in popularity thanks to artists like Taylor Swift and Mumford and Sons. Dance music is also increasing in popularity, due to Calvin Harris and David Guetta. Rap music's so-so. People still like Eminem.\n. \n. But popular music is still the most....well, popular! (MORE)
Think of the 50's. You've come out of WWII and this is the time when people moved out of the cities to the suburbs. You've got Elvis, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby. Picture poodle skirts and rollar skates, Grease and West Side Story.
Rap music first hit the mainstream in 1979 when The Sugarhill Gang dropped "Rapper's Delight" over the top of the beat to "Good Times" by Chic. At that time Chic was one of the more popular groups out and "Good Times" their most popular song. Wonder Mike, Master Gee, and Big Bank Hank, had the whole… nation rapping along with their melodic rendition. Later, in 1985, Run DMC affectively changed the hip hop audience forever when they recorded a remake of the Aerosmith hit "Walk This Way", which crossed over and became rap music's first multi-platinum smash. The industry has not been the same since with crossover and mass appeal beyond any of the pioneer's wildest imaginations. This answer is a bit misleading, though. There was a rap explosion in 1989-90-- that is when it became a true mainstream genre. Although rap existed in 1979, it was not popular as a genre. (MORE)

Art music is music written for a non musical idea. This is distinct from music which is created with a functional objective; for example, folk music and popular music are created with the primary objective of providing entertainment, not necessarily to engage the listener in a consideration of the intellectual and emotional content of the music itself. the thing is that music is the biggest art because it is so much easier to give emotion through music, a painting needs to have a perfect focus or touch in it but music can bring so much more quality in the essence of the emotion in music. you can build a sad focus by playing string instruments in a…n e minor chords, all the notes bring a mournful feel to its audience, people dont understand the beauty of classical and orchestral music, its just that any instrument can be used in it :) thats it (MORE)

Music is a art because you improvise* in it, and it can make you feel happy, or sad, or really angry. Art can do that to, depending on the colors and the picture. *Improvise means to make up on the spot, or to pull out of thin air. Example: In a song you have to improvise to fill in a rest, and in a…rt you have to improvise to think of what to paint, draw, sculpt, etz. (MORE)

I think classical music was popular in the 1900's. ____________ Broadly defined, "Classical music" can refer to any art music from the 9th Century to the present. The distinctions are becoming blurred , but art music is music other than the popular forms listened to casually, or enjoyed by t…he majority of young people, like rap, jazz, all the forms or rock, country, etc. Classical music in this sense is being written today. People are writing large-scale works for symphony orchestras for example, that follow structural ideas and that often deal with sound that is free of lyrics. Many young people today think that lyrics and music are identical, or that the music is incidental or less important. No value judgments here-- just observations. On the other hand, the "Classical Period" is more narrowly defined as being roughly between the periods known as Baroque and Romantic. This period is about 1730/1750 to 1815/1820. Music from this "Classical Period" is just a part of the "Classical music" as thought of in the broad definition. Mozart is the highlight of the Classical Period, and Beethoven is sometimes regarded as an important transition figure between Classical and Romantic periods. So, Classical Period music was indeed popular music during the Classical Period, between the early 1700's and the early 1800's. But classical music is wildly popular even today, and it is not likely that the classical craze will end any time soon. See links for more. ______________ Classical music is still popular, but it seems that 'popular' depends on how many people enjoy it. Besides that, the music today was formed on the foundation of classical music, no matter how different it may sound. Classical music wasn't the beginning of music, but it has had a big impact on music today. So, you could easily say it's still popular today. (MORE)

Rap and Hip Hop were on their way to success in the late 1900s. It was made popular just by it's mere coming into the industry. Rap and Hip Hop songs were being played on the radio, and everyone was talking about it. It was a new era of music, and everyone was excited for it. People like Jam Master …Jay (of Run DMC) made it popular, along with Easy E and other old school artists like Doug E Fresh. Then in the late 80s and 90s, a whole new game arose from Rap, and that was Dr Dre/Snoop Dogg/Tupac/Biggie/Eminem era. Eminem is a great example, because he appeals to basically anyone. If one wanted classic, gangsta music, they could hit up some Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg songs. If someone wanted a sort of different breed of Rap, they could check out Eminem's music. Then in 2000 and onwards, there was 50 Cent, who popularized Rap and Hip Hop immensely. So basically it was a new era in music, and people started to indulge in that. It still is, and always will be, the best genre of music ever. (MORE)

Music started a long time ago, long before recorded history. During the Renaissance, a period of time when art, writing, and music were all further developed, it gained prominence and refinement.
Believe it or not, jazz was mainstream "pop music" from the 1920's into the 1960's. Instead of Kanye West and Taylor Swift, they had Frank Sinatra and Billy Holiday as famous pop stars. Whereas today it is usually a band or a solo vocalist that is popular, they had instrumentalists just as famous as… any singer today. Glen Miller, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman were all instrumentalists, leaders of jazz bands, and famous pop stars, being played on the radio, records selling like hotcakes, etc. (MORE)
Alfonso sat on the porch trying to push his crooked teeth to where he thought they belonged. He hated the way he looked. Last week he did fifty sit-ups a day, thinking that he would burn those already apparent ripples on his stomach to even deeper ripples, dark ones, so when he went swimming at the …canal next summer, girls in cut-offs would notice. And the guys would think he was tough, someone who could take a punch and give it back. He wanted "cuts" like those he had seen on a calendar of an Aztec warrior standing on a pyramid with a woman in his arms. (Even she had cuts he could see beneath her thin dress.) The calendar hung above the cash register at La Plaza. Orsua, the owner, said Alfonso could have the calendar at the end of the year if the waitress, Yolanda, didn't take it first. Alfonso studied the magazine pictures of rock stars for a hairstyle. He liked the way Prince looked-and the bass player from Los Lobos. Alfonso thought he would look cool with his hair razored into a V in the back and streaked purple. But he knew his mother wouldn't go for it. And his father, who was pure Mexican, would sit in his chair after work, sullen as a toad, and call him "sissy." Alfonso didn't dare color his hair. But one day he had had it botched on the top, like in the magazines. His father had come home that evening from a softball game, happy that his team had drilled four homers in a thirteen-to-five bashing of Color Tile. He'd swaggered into the living room but had stopped cold when he saw Alfonso and asked, not joking but with real concern, "Did you hurt your head at school? ¿Qué pasó?" Alfonso had pretended not to hear his father and had gone to his room, where he studied his hair from all angles in the mirror. He liked what he saw until he smiled and realized for the first time that his teeth were crooked, like a pile of wrecked cars. He grew depressed and turned away from the mirror. He sat on his bed and leafed through the rock magazine until he came to the rock star with the butched top. His mouth was closed, but Alfonso was sure his teeth weren't crooked. Alfonso didn't want to be the handsomest kid at school, but he was determined to be better looking than average. The next day he spent his lawn-mowing money on a new shirt and, with a pocketknife, scooped the moons of dirt from under his fingernails. He spent hours in front of the mirror trying to herd his teeth into place with his thumb. He asked his mother if he could have braces, like Frankie Molina, her godson, but he asked at the wrong time. She was at the kitchen table licking the envelope to the house payment. She glared up at him. "Do you think money grows on trees?" His mother clipped coupons from magazines and newspapers, kept a vegetable garden in the summer, and shopped at Penney's and K-Mart. Their family ate a lot of frijoles, which was OK because nothing else tasted so good, though one time Alfonso had had Chinese pot stickers and thought they were the next best food in the world. He didn't ask his mother for braces again, even when she was in a better mood. He decided to fix his teeth by pushing on them with his thumbs. After breakfast that Saturday he went to his room, closed the door quietly, turned the radio on, and pushed for three hours straight. He pushed for ten minutes, rested for five, and every half hour, during a radio commercial, checked to see if his smile had improved. It hadn't. Eventually he grew bored and went outside with an old gym sock to wipe down his bike, a ten-speed from Montgomery Ward. His thumbs were tired and wrinkled and pink, the way they got when he stayed in the bathtub too long. Alfonso's older brother, Ernie, rode up on his Montgomery Ward bicycle looking depressed. He parked his bike against the peach tree and sat on the back steps, keeping his head down and stepping on ants that came too close. Alfonso knew better than to say anything when Ernie looked mad. He turned his bike over, balancing it on the handlebars and seat, and flossed the spokes with the sock. When he was finished, he pressed a knuckle to his teeth until they tingled. Ernie groaned and said, "Ah, man." Alfonso waited a few minutes before asking, "What's the matter?" He pretended not to be too interested. He picked up a wad of steel wool and continued cleaning the spokes. Ernie hesitated, not sure if Alfonso would laugh. But it came out. "Those girls didn't show up. And you better not laugh." (MORE)
Rock music sounds llike The Beatles, Steve Miller Band, Bruce Springsteen, The Doors, The Ramones, etc. However, American popular music since 1998 is mostly hip-hop, techno, and rap and uses computers to make most of the music.

Popular music is popular is popular for many reasons but one of the main reasons is that the same songs play on the radio station. It will get stuck in your head easily i…f you listen to the radio enough, and eventually you will have to like it!
